$150 Oil Is Not a Horror Story. It’s the Market Doing Its Job.

$150 Oil Is Not a Horror Story. It’s the Market Doing Its Job.

Bank of America just told clients the quiet part out loud: if the Iran war drags and inventories keep draining, Brent crude may have to print well above $150 a barrel before the world finally uses less oil. The same desk lifted its year-end Brent call from $83 to $95. Francisco Blanch, BofA’s head of global commodities, put it plainly — damaged infrastructure and rising geopolitical risk make a fast return to “normal” unlikely.

That is not a death sentence for the economy. It is a price signal. And for anyone who still believes oil is the foundation of modern life — farms, freight, jet fuel, plastics, asphalt, fertilizer, national power — it is also a reminder of why American barrels matter.

The chokepoint never stopped being a chokepoint

About one-fifth of the world’s seaborne crude still has to thread the Strait of Hormuz. Visible tanker traffic there is a fraction of the pre-war pace. Reports have put some days as low as a handful of commodity vessels versus more than a hundred ships a day before the fighting. Alternative routes, escorts, and ship-to-ship transfers have kept some Gulf barrels moving. They have not restored the old system.

Houthi strikes on Saudi energy assets added another layer of risk. Strategic and commercial stocks have been drawn down — BofA has cited hundreds of millions of barrels off the peak. Near-term futures have traded in backwardation: buyers paying up for oil now because later oil is not guaranteed. That is what a tight physical market looks like.

Brent has already seen $110-plus prints this month, then pulled back when headlines turned to peace talks and a possible Trump–Iran meeting around the UN. Hope is not inventory. A speech does not refill a tank farm.

High prices are how you get more oil — and how you use less of the wrong kind

Critics treat $100 or $150 oil as a moral failure. Markets treat it as information.

At $60 oil, a lot of American shale, Canadian oil sands, and high-cost offshore does not get drilled. At $95–$110, rigs stay busy, services companies staff up, royalty checks hit rural counties, and refiners run hard. At a true spike above $150, demand finally breaks in the places it should break first: discretionary driving, wasteful industrial use, and buyers who were betting the Middle East would stay quiet forever.

BofA’s $150 line is not the base case. It is the tail: disruptions into spring 2027, or more infrastructure hit, and the front-month contract has to rise high enough to ration the last barrels. That is ugly at the pump. It is also how every previous oil shock ended — not with a press conference, but with price.

$150 Oil Is Not a Horror Story. It’s the Market Doing Its Job.

The United States is not a helpless importer in this story. It is the world’s largest oil producer. Record output, a deep services industry, and export capacity are the reason a Hormuz crisis did not immediately become a 1970s-style shortage here. Exporting crude and products is not “shipping American energy away.” It is what keeps U.S. wells and refineries running at scale. Ban the exports and you fill tanks on the Gulf Coast, force run cuts, and lose gasoline and jet fuel along with diesel. Industry groups have been saying that out loud while diesel sits near record retail levels. They are right.

Energy security is barrels in the ground and barrels on the water

Peace talks are worth watching. So is the futures curve. If the strait stays constrained, if Saudi systems stay a target, if stocks keep falling, $95 year-end Brent is not aggressive — it is conservative. The $150 scenario is the market’s way of saying demand must give if supply cannot.

A pro-oil stance is not “cheer for war.” It is refuse the fantasy that the world already replaced oil. Planes still burn jet fuel. Combines still burn diesel. Chemicals still start with hydrocarbons. Until that changes at scale, the countries that produce oil, refine it, and move it will set the terms.

BofA just raised the price target and mapped the tail risk. The useful response is not to punish producers. It is to keep American fields open, keep refineries running, keep export docks working, and treat $100 oil as what it is: proof that the molecule still runs the world — and that the people who can deliver it should be allowed to.
